The inaugural Christchurch River Pageant, held on Saturday, August 16th, was a brilliant success. No one could have envisaged the huge crowds this spectacle enticed along the banks of the River Stour and Christchurch Quay.

The parade was led by the Christchurch Sailing Club’s historic gentlemen’s yacht, Ianthe. It was closely followed by a mixture of craft, including an inflatable duck, animated ducking stools, kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, plus three dragon boats. Two of the dragon boats were paddled by Bourne Water Dragons (an all-cancer team), and the third by Pink Champagne (a breast cancer team).

This colourful show celebrated the history of Christchurch, and participants did not disappoint—dressing up as pirates, smugglers, naval captains, and other maritime characters. Onlookers were rewarded with sea shanties, cheers, and enthusiastic flag-waving as the procession proceeded.

Bourne Water Dragons pulled out all the stops, dressing as pirates and roaring at the crowds as they paddled past cheering spectators. The team filled two boats and made a big impact with fancy dress, makeup, and hair extensions. The larger boat paraded along the river performing a ‘Paddle Pause’ stroke to impress the crowds.

The parade was accompanied by the Marine Volunteer Service, local Sea Cadets, and Sea Scouts, who kept a lookout for safety on the water.

Prior to the start, the dragon boats were blessed by a Chinese dragon dance—a tradition when purchasing a new boat to keep paddlers safe.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Hengistbury Head Outdoor Centre, Bourne Water Dragons, and Pink Champagne cancer survivor charities. Donations are still being collected.

The event concluded with a prize-giving ceremony for the best-dressed entries and certificates for all.

It was organised by the Christchurch and Boscombe & Southbourne Rotary Clubs, with support from the Christchurch Chamber of Trade, Town Council, BID team, and local traders.
